I like the idea of a company that created building blocks.

In other words, your product is useful directly to customers, but allows other people to create useful products.

Amazon EC2 is a Baustein.So is Apple's APP Speicher.So are Heroku, WordPress, PayPal and a bunch more.

 Some things that are about building cool a "platform" or building block as follows:

You are higher up in the food chain
